We took this for The Band album in the basement of Rick’s house on Chestnut Hill Road in Zena. Rick and Grace moved into this house after they got married. The Band wanted some real photos of themselves playing multiple instruments in their normal milieu. As with every other session we did, there was no precise plan. They played whatever instruments they felt like fooling around with, and I snapped away, documenting their process in a photo vérité style, which is how I nearly always photograph. It was a lot of fun so they just kept doing it, finding new instruments to include, re-positioning themselves and playing music. We had at least two sessions on different days. There are many more really good photos from these sessions but only space for a few in this book. Woodstock, NY, ’69
